Bread and Circus Wholefoods Canteen

For my birthday this year, a lovely friend took me on a bit of a foodie crawl, visiting three different wholefood eateries, over the course of one day! Although all three had their own different appeal, it was Bread & Circus Wholefoods Canteen in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria, that really won me.
Bread & Circus Wholefoods Canteen is located in a modest building, somewhat hidden in the back streets of Alexandria, a simple space filled with natural light, occupying the back corner of an old building. There are no amazing landscape views, mod decor with white table cloths or formal waiters found here. Instead it is refreshing to find a rustic, laid back vibe, timber tables, deck chairs in the sunshine, friendly staff, living plants, flowers and produce on the tables and surrounds and the food... the food is so simple and yet so brilliant.

Open seven days from 8am - 4pm, no bookings on the weekends, the menu which changes DAILY, is uploaded to the their website each morning, and if your local you can call or email your lunch order by 10am.
Each day their is a seasonal smoothie - daily seasonal blend, organic milk & a dash of omega-3 rich flax $9 with the choice of + healthy hippie add-ons: raw biodynamic egg yolk +$3 probiotic kefir instead of milk +$3
Or you could start with the fresh cold pressed organic juice - in a little glass $6 or in a large glass $8

They also serve organic drinking coconuts delicious and energising, high in potassium & full of lauric acid

The breakfast menu offers a whole range of choice, usually including a muesli or porridge, variety of eggs, pancakes, lots of fresh fruit and simple sourdough or biodynamic essene bread toasted w/ organic butter / jam / marmalade/ organic honey / raw organic choclate-coconut butter. There is also a list of sides you can add to your breakie from $4 - $6
On my birthday visit we enjoyed another kind of breakfast - slow cooked brocoli & kale in sage-garlic butter under parmesan-chive w/ toasted sourdough + boiled biodynamic egg $16/$3 - this really was a taste sensation!
On a more recent visit it was the pancakes that caught my interest - jude's very particular pancakes - pre soaked buckwheat, black quinoa & coconut rapadura, wholefood pancakes w/maple-orange gloss &/or maple biodynamic yoghurt $16
They were particualrly delicious too!

The lunch menu from noon, includes the following categories, with dishes varying depending on the season and the kitchen's creative juices!
Circus soups - side $7 bowl $14 takeaway $10
the salad plates - choose any or all half plate $14 regular plate $16 sharing plate $25 takeaway $14
As well as + extra salad sides - a huge choice from $3 - $7
Then there is the sandwich boxes - ready to-go or eat-in biodegradable boxes full of fresh bright quirky organic sandwich fillings w/ freshly cut slices of sourdough & salad side things $13 - $16
Final choice for lunch is the daily plate - amazing main size something with daily salads, the price varies between approx $18 - $24
On a recent visit we had the daily plate - an amazing Inglewood Organic Chicken, slow cooked in a herb crumb, served with daily salads - superb!

There is also a wonderful variety of cups -
a variety of teas and tonics $4-$7

classic & quirky blacks - full bodied blacks w/beautiful character
sublime oolongs - amazing health benefits & exquisite flavour profiles
greens - with an emphasis on green tea in Japanese tradition almost teas - restorative and piquant tisanes & tea-tisane blends
warm chocolates - stove-top callebaut chocolate (milk or dark) gently melted into your choice of organic milk $7

I love going to eateries with ever-changing menus. You're placing your trust in the chef that they can think on their feet and enjoying the freshest produce they've been able to secure that day.
I wish I still lived in Sydney, as I think I would adore Bread & Circus Wholefoods Canteen :)
